Common Mistake in Writing Title Tags
By: Rahman Mehraby

There are several mistakes that people make in writing title tags for their webpages. If you want to have a search engine friendly website to achieve higher rankings, you should avoid these mistakes and replace them with correct search engine optimization (SEO) practices. here are some of them:

1. Writing the same title (company name) for all their pages. You may ask who may do such a mistake. I will tell you several big companies that are proud of their brand names have done so. They mention their companies' names as the title of all the pages.

2. Writing lots of unnecessary words to describe the page content. Usually those unnecessary words are the keywords that website owners would like to rank highly for. The mistake gets worse when they use such a string of words for all the pages.

3. Repeating the page's keyword too many times in an unnatural way. Some people keep writing the same keyphrase with a word before or after them and do this several times. Eventually, the entire title tag would look like a repetition of the same thing with stuffed keywords. This isn't a good search engine optimization practice.

4. Writing all the title tag in CAPITAL LETTERS. As search engines pay special attention to certain words that are capitalized, some use capital letters for all the words in their titles. This will have no positive consequence for them while applying this rule to the most important word could have very effective impact both on human readers and search engines.

5. Refraining from checking the spelling, grammar, etc of title tags. It's quite common among some people not to double check such subtle points before publishing the page. The outcome will never benefit them as they expect, because those little points matter in good search engine optimization practice.

6. Copying competitors' title tags in a blind-folded way. Some people who have seen their competitors ranking highly for certain keyphrases, imitate them without noticing the difference in the page content, etc. It's not only those words at the titles that bring success to a site. Many other factors are involved in search engine optimization process. At least it should be highly relevant to the specific content you have at your page.

7. Using useless characters just to draw attention. You should consider the value of each and every character that takes space at your title. The more unnecessary signs and characters you use, the lower weight your keyphrase will have. This is a fact and an example of good search engine optimization practices.

Time to Take Action

Now, go back to your websites and have a look at its title tags. Double check the title tags and see if you've followed the practices mentioned at this article. If so, just edit them and use the correct practice and make it the rule for the pages to create later. This will definitely help your pages rank better.
